He Also Served…
(Character Study* of Jonathan)
- Bro. Udhayakumar
Greetings in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. In Bible, some of the unknown peoples did work for the sake of God. They are the simple shadow of most of us. In this study, we shall mediate the works of Jonathan who was almost forgotten by our people. From this study we can assure that our lives may seen unimportant to the people, but we are important to God and he knows each one of us. “I’ am distressed for thee my brother Jonathan very pleasant host thou, been unto me; they love to me was wonderful, passing the love of women” II. Samuel. 1:26.
David is praising his friend, about his love and braveness. The Bible says about the friendship of ‘David and Jonathan’. But the brave work of Jonathan was most probably hidden. We can search his divine character through the help of Holy Spirit.
1. His Humbleness
In I sam 13:1-4 we read about King Saul and his son Jonathan. King Saul had chosen 3,000 men of Israel to form an Army. He kept 2,000 men under his own command and send 1,000 men to be with his Jonathan. Jonathan immediately led these men in attack against their enemies. He got victory in that fight.aul quietly spread this news and blew a trumphet, “Let the Hebrew
hear”. What the Hebrews heard was that Saul defeated the philistines. There was no mention of thanks to God nor of Jonathan. How humble nature Jonathan got. His own father robbed his fame. But he never complained of it. Brother, Sister in your ministry, work spot you might have done some successful work. Your seniors might blew a trumpet, that they had done it. Cheer up Jesus says. “Your work shall be rewarded”. “When thou doest alms, let not thou they left hand know. What right hand doeth”. Mt.6:3.
The notable thing is when Saul was punished because of his disobedience. God word came through prophet Samuel, that his kingdom does not continue (I Sam. 15:15). This mean that Jonathan would not be king after his father. So he lost out his kingdom because of his father’s disobedience. Yet Jonathan did not complain nor murmur. What about you Brother? Do you murmur on complaint when you lost opportunities, because of
the total mistake was with others. Remember one thing, you are called to bear sufferings. Humble thyself in the sight of the Lord for he alone will exalt you. Amen.
2. His Zeal for God
“…it may be that the Lord will work for us. For there is no restraint to the Lord to save by many or by few”. 1 Sam. 14:16. Here we see Jonathan’s statement of confidence, that saul did not. Saul had about six hundred men, but still he was sitting under a tree. (1 Sam. 14:2). Dear beloved, please understand that God cannot use a lazy person for his glorious ministry. Jonathan and a young assistant took responsible for the sake of their people . He trusted God more than his soldiers. The host of God gave them victory over the enemies by making terrible works. “Not by strength nor by power but by the spirit of God”, it has happened. Jonathan put his courage and faith into action. He went over to their enemies and killed 20 men of them with the help of only one soldier.
Brother! Sister!! God expects you to be zeal for God. “Do you think that the scripture saith in vain the spirit that dwelleth in us lusteth to envy” (watches over us with tender, Jealousy) - James.4:5. Seek God first, and give importance to him alone God expects your love towards him is to be as strong as death. Esther said “… if I perish, I perish” for the sake of God". Do you have these zeal for God which was exposed through these Biblical peoples?
3. His Loving Heart
David praised Jonathan (after his death) “…thy love to me was wonderful passing the love of woman”. (2. Sam. 1:26).Here we see Jonathan’s affectionateness towards his friend David. In Bible we see the principle, “love towards God with full heart and love towards men as thy self”. This is the clear revelation of God for those who want to fulfil God’s will. (Read I Corinthian 13th Chapter). Jonathan’s was such a man, he loved God with his full heart and loved David as himself. He said to David, “Fear not… thou shalt be king over Israel and I shall be next unto thee.” See the statement of Jonathan. The real thing was Jonathan would be king after Saul(till that time). But he openly declared that David will be king and he will be next to him. I find no words to explain his love. Yes reader, true love knows no politics. “And Jonathan Saul’s son arose and went to David into the wood and strengthened his hand in God”. (1 Sam. 23:16).
He was convinced in his heart that David would be king and he would not. Jonathan had a true and unselfish love. The million-dollar question is why this humble, faithful, loving, true friend did not stayed with David during his rejection time. It’s Lord to justify of such a likeable person. We know he trusted in the Lord. So we shall leave the judgement to him. Jonathan stood for his father and died in a Pathetical way (I Chro.10:2) It was a sad ending to a beautiful life. How many of us, having such a divine qualities in our life? Dear beloved, do you love God with all your heart? Do you love others as yourself? Do you have the zeal for God? Do you have the humbleness in your life? Kindly Think of it. May God bless you, Amen.
